After winning the Northern League Division One at the end of the 2018/19 football season, Dunston FC have kicked off the new season with a series of improvements at their home ground. The upgrades were unveiled prior to their 3-3 draw against Runcorn Linnets at the UTS Stadium and were made possible by investment from the Premier League, which has been delivered by the Football Stadia Improvement Fund (FSIF).

The investment has allowed Dunston FC, who now play in the Northern Premier League, North West, at Step 4, to replace the existing pitch perimeter barrier and team dugouts, together with the replacement of the site boundary fencing and installation of two new ticket booths.

The works carried out at the UTS Stadium comprise several elements to improve the ground and ensure that Dunston FC satisfy the requirements of Category F of the FA National Ground Grading Criteria, applicable to their Step 4 position.

Dunston FC were founded in 1975 and sit across the River Tyne from Newcastle United’s iconic St James’ Park. Many of the club’s existing committee are former payers and management from the original playing side in 1975.

The project was made possible by a £47,314 grant from the Premier League, which is delivered through the Football Stadia Improvement Fund – the sister organisation of the Football Foundation.

In 2014 Dunston FC were awarded a £51,863 grant from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund to build a new modular clubhouse at the UTS Stadium. This brings the total FSIF investment at Dunston FC to £99,177.

Malcolm James, Chairman, said: “We would like to thank the Football Stadia Improvement Fund and the Premier League for the grant that has helped transform the UTS Stadium. Thanks to the funds raised from last seasons amazing FA Cup run and the generosity from the FSIF we have been able to develop the ground to a fantastic standard. Feedback from our supporters and visitors to the stadium has been fantastic and we are looking forward to the coming season with relish”

Peter McCormick OBE, Chairman of the Football Stadia Improvement Fund, said: “The improvements made at the UTS Stadium were crucial in helping Dunston Football Club secure promotion to Step 4 in the Northern Premier League, North West. The fantastic new facilities are sure to improve the match-day experience of players and fans.

“The works are further proof of the Premier League’s continued investment in grassroots sport, helping to develop and progress clubs up the football pyramid. I wish the club all the best for the coming season and look forward to seeing them go from strength to strength.”
